Standards

A UK medical certificate service built for athletes

GMC-registered doctors

Every certificate is reviewed and signed by a doctor registered with the UK General Medical Council. The signing doctor's name, GMC number, and professional stamp appear on every certificate.

Clinical oversight

All clinical operations are overseen by Dr Maria Knobel, Medical Director (GMC 7495073). Dr Knobel is responsible for clinical governance, certificate standards, and the review process across MedicalCert UK.

Data protection

Health information is submitted through secure online forms and handled in accordance with UK data protection requirements. MedicalCert UK is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

Service scope: This service issues sports medical certificates based on a review of the health information you provide. It is not a substitute for emergency medical care. If you have severe symptoms or a medical emergency, contact 999 or your local emergency services immediately.
Coverage

Events and activities we issue certificates for

Endurance events

Marathons, half marathons, ultra-distance races, triathlons, Ironman events, cycling sportives, gran fondos, trail races, and open-water swimming competitions. Covers events in France (where PPS is not accepted), Belgium, Spain, and the UK.

Contact and combat sports

Boxing, MMA, kickboxing, martial arts competitions, and other contact sports where event organisers or governing bodies require doctor clearance confirming fitness to compete.

Event-specific forms

If your event provides a specific certificate template or form, you can upload it with your submission. The doctor completes it where what you have declared supports doing so. Common for UTMB series events and European cycling sportives.

What we cannot cover

Italian competitive events that require DM 18/02/1982 certification are not suitable for online assessment. These events mandate in-person ECG, spirometry, and urine analysis by a sports medicine doctor. If your event falls under Italian competitive rules, you will need an in-person sports medicine appointment.

Process

How it works

01

Complete the online form

The questionnaire covers your health history, current medication, and anything that has happened during exercise, such as chest pain or blackouts. It also asks which event the certificate is for, because the wording differs between federations. Where the organiser publishes its own template, attach it and the doctor will work from that document.

02

Doctor reviews your submission

A named GP on the GMC register reads the submission in full. The judgement is whether anything you have declared makes participation in that specific activity unsafe, rather than whether you are fit in a general sense. If something needs clarifying, the doctor comes back to you before deciding.

03

Receive your signed certificate

The document arrives by email as a signed PDF carrying the reviewing doctor's name, GMC number and stamp, which is what organisers check when they verify a certificate. Where the clinical picture does not support issuing one, nothing is charged.

Every submission is reviewed individually by a GMC-registered GP. From £67. Full refund if a certificate cannot be issued on clinical grounds.

Clinical standards and transparency

Full refund guarantee

If a reviewing doctor determines that a certificate cannot be issued on clinical grounds, you are not charged. The refund is processed automatically.

Verifiable credentials

Every certificate carries the signing doctor's full name and GMC registration number, which can be independently verified on the GMC register. Clinical oversight by Dr Maria Knobel, Medical Director (GMC 7495073).

Important: Issuing a certificate does not guarantee acceptance by an event organiser, club, insurer, or institution. Requirements for certificate wording, format, and supporting tests vary between events. Always check the specific requirements of your event before applying.
FAQs

Common questions

Who reviews my submission?

A GMC-registered GP reviews every submission individually. All clinical operations are overseen by Dr Maria Knobel, Medical Director (GMC 7495073). The signing doctor's name and GMC number appear on every certificate.

Is a certificate always issued?

No. A doctor reviews each request on its own merits and issues documentation only where clinically appropriate based on the information provided. If a certificate cannot be issued, you receive a full refund.

Do all event organisers accept online certificates?

Most event organisers that require a GP-signed certificate accept online certificates issued by a GMC-registered doctor. The exception is Italian competitive events under DM 18/02/1982, which require in-person examination including ECG and spirometry. Always confirm your event's specific requirements before applying.

What if my event provides a specific form?

Upload the form with your submission. The reviewing doctor will complete it where the clinical information supports doing so. This is common for UTMB series events, European cycling sportives, and other races that publish their own certificate template.

How quickly will I receive my certificate?

Timing depends on the route you choose and on how complete your submission is. If the reviewing doctor needs further information before a decision can be made, the process takes longer. Because organisers set upload deadlines ahead of the event, apply two to three weeks before the deadline so there is room for any follow-up.
